History

History of Kiriri Women’s University of Science and Technology

Kiriri Women's University of Science and Technology (KWUST), established in 2002, holds the distinction of being the first women-only university in East and Southern Africa. Its founding stemmed from a recognition of the gender gap in higher education, particularly in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields.

Dr. Paul Gachanga Ndarua, the founder, envisioned KWUST as a space where women could thrive in a supportive environment. The university's story is intertwined with the Lucie Kiriri Girls Secondary School, built in 1992 by Dr. Ndarua. Witnessing the disparity in educational opportunities for women, he envisioned KWUST as the next step in their academic journey.

KWUST's mission is to empower women in science and technology fields, bridge the gender gap in higher education, and contribute to Kenya's social and economic development. The university offers Bachelors of Science degrees in Mathematics (Actuarial, Pure, Statistics), Computer Science, and Business Administration, along with diplomas and certificates.

Located on the outskirts of Nairobi, KWUST provides a holistic learning experience that fosters not only academic achievement but also personal development. The university's philosophy emphasizes scientific inquiry guided by Christian principles, aiming to equip graduates with the tools and knowledge to become successful contributors to society.

Today, KWUST stands as a testament to Dr. Ndarua's vision and a beacon of hope for women seeking careers in STEM fields across East Africa.
